This week, we take a look at:

MINOR IMPACT AND SOFT TISSUE INJURY (MIST) CLAIMS

(also known as Low Impact and Soft Tissue (LIST) claims)

MIST is an acronym that means “Minor Impact Soft Tissue.” MIST is a classification used to designate an insurance claim that involves minimal visible damage to a vehicle and a “soft-tissue” injury.

Some common soft-tissue injuries resulting from car accidents include:

  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Contusions
  • Whiplash

Medical Canvassing can assist all lines of insurance associated with any bodily injury claim (Workers’ Compensation, Auto Bodily Injury, Disability, etc…). No matter the line of insurance involved, the key point of consideration is that at any time a claimant and/or their attorney may knowingly withhold information pertaining to a claimant’s medical treatment history. As an example, claimants often “pick and choose” what medical information is being shared whether it is a 1st party or 3rd party claim. In any case, being able to further validate or discover other medical providers involved in treating the claimant is always going to be critical in evaluating the claim as well as potentially identifying a clearer picture of exposure. INTERTEL’s Medical Canvass Analysts search the specified area(s) and gather certain detailed information that may indicate the presence of a possible pre-existing condition.

  • Determines if the Claimant received treatment prior to the date of loss.
  • Verifies the alleged injuries are not those for which the Claimant previously sought treatment.
  • Helps determine whether the Claimant has a history of injury claims.
  • Assesses whether the reported injuries occurred outside the course of employment.
  • Discovers unknown treatment information not previously disclosed by the Claimant or Claimant’s attorney.
  • Uncovers possible patterns of drug-seeking behavior.
  • Substantiates Claimant statements about prior medical treatment and reveals possible material misrepresentations.
  • Provides treatment information for specific time periods when conducting searches for pre-existing conditions.
