When we think about canvassing social media channels and other websites, the first ones that come to mind are probably Instagram, Facebook and X. And while these channels can certainly be full of useful information, they aren’t the only sources that should be considered during a social canvass. Here are a few examples of other apps and websites that can provide valuable information:
Transactional and classified apps
Examples: Venmo, PayPal, CashApp, Poshmark, Etsy, OfferUp
Activity on these apps and websites can help establish a connection between claimants or indicate additional sources of income. Venmo can be particularly valuable as it can show both a person’s transactions and friend list, which is created from their phone contacts.
Exercise apps
Examples: MaxPrep, Strava, Runkeeper, Nike+
These apps can be used to establish activity levels both before and after an alleged injury. They can also potentially help determine a claimant’s location during certain dates and times.
Music apps
Examples: Spotify, SoundCloud
Unlike Facebook or Instagram where a person may have hundreds or thousands of friends and followers, users typically keep their connections on music apps limited to those closest to them. Canvassing these apps can help establish a person’s immediate network, which in turn can lead to uncovering more information about the claimant themselves.
